Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy
The purpose of this website is to provide information about the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) in the context of Brock University.
As of June 10, 2006, FIPPA includes all universities in Ontario. The two key principles of the Act are public access to information and the protection of personal privacy. These are principles that Brock University has always valued. Brock will continue to build on its system of best business practices to protect personal information and the privacy of individuals while providing access to its general records.
FIPPA recognizes the University's legitimate need to collect personal information in order to carry out its mandate under the authority of The Brock University Act. FIPPA creates a general right of access to information under the custody and control of the University as broadly defined, and protects the personal privacy of individuals. Access to information is subject to limited and specific exemptions, some of which are mandatory while others are discretionary. In addition, there are certain exclusions to access where FIPPA does not apply. FIPPA outlines requirements for the collection, use, disclosure, retention and disposal of personal information.
The Office of the University Secretariat has primary responsibility for administering FIPPA as delegated by the President and Vice-Chancellor. All formal requests under the Act must be directed to the Freedom of Information and Privacy Coordinator.
