Notification of Planned Power Interruption - Cairns Family Health and Bioscience Research Complex - Thursday April 17th, 2014
Posted April 15, 2014
Please be advised that Hydro One and Horizon Utilities have advised Brock University that they will be disconnecting power to the M71 power line for 18 hours for a mandatory upgrade to overhead conductors. The M71 power line supplies electricity to the Cairns Complex specifically and will result in a planned power interruption. In anticipation of this planned work, Facilities Management staff will switch the Cairns Complex to power line M52 which is fed via campus feeder #2. The switch over will take place on Thursday April 17th, 2014 at 7:30 am for the least amount of impact to operations within the building. Occupants will notice a short power interruption (<30 seconds) as the feeders are changed over. Switching back to the normal configuration is planned for early in the week of April 28th. A notice will be sent once a date and time has been coordinated. Due to this scheduled power interruption it is asked that any sensitive equipment including computers or services that are not connected to an uninterruptable power supply, be shutdown prior to leaving for the day on Wednesday April 16th, 2014.

Annual Main Campus Switch from Heating to Cooling
Posted April 9, 2014
Facilities Management trade staff are busy preparing the Main Campus cooling systems at the central chilling plant for summer operation. Due to the type of heating and cooling system that is used here at Brock University many buildings on the Main Campus are not capable of heating and cooling during the same cycle. As daytime temperatures increase nightly temperatures will remain relatively cool making building heating necessary.
As we experience typical spring time daily cycles of low night time temperatures and warmer day time temperatures some areas on the Main Campus will experience higher than normal temperatures during regular office hours. Facilities Management staff will continue to make the Main Campus as comfortable as possible by bringing cool fresh air into the areas that are normally cooled by the central chilling plant until night time heating is no longer required.
If your area experiences cooling issues please refrain from operating any heat producing equipment which is not necessary as well as shut off any lighting that is not required. Offices with windows should close blinds when possible to keep out radiant heat.
If you have any questions or concerns please contact Facilities Management Customer Service at x3717 or email facilitiesmanagement@brocku.ca or Dave McArthur, Manager, Mechanical Services at x3278 or at dmcarthur@brocku.ca

Information Regarding Cluster Flies - Schmon Tower
Posted April 4, 2014
Every spring and fall the occupants in the Schmon Tower notice an increase of flies. These flies are Cluster flies and they typically live outdoors, in the fall they migrate towards warmth and in the spring they attempt to return to the outdoors. These flies are different than the House fly which consumes trash and debris. They do not carry disease and are not in the building due to poor housekeeping, but are seeking warmth. Their larvae consume earth worms to survive and adults feed on plant material. As such, these flies do not multiply while they are indoors.
Repair work to the exterior caulking and window sealing to help prevent the immigration of the flies has been identified on the University’s Deferred Maintenance list, but the work is not anticipated to start this year. In the meanwhile, Custodial Services will be cleaning the window sills in the tower on a routine basis.
