Notification of CL3 Facility Testing - Cairns Family Health and Bioscience Research Complex - Thursday April 30, 2015
Posted April 29, 2015
Please be advised that on Thursday April 30, 2015 testing and inspections are planned on building systems supporting the CL3 laboratory on the 500 Level. These activities are part of the Public Health Agency of Canada’s (PHAC) annual re-certification process. Some of the tests include simulating a power failure and ensuring that the building and emergency systems operate properly during specific equipment failures and during a power outage. Interruptions of normal power to the building are not anticipated during this time, but interruptions to the emergency power system will occur as the generators come online and offline during these tests.

These tests will be done during the hours of 6:00am to 8:00am on April 30th. All emergency power systems (RED Receptacles and RED Light switches) will be affected on the west end of the building. The centre staircase is used as the midway dividing east and west of the building. This interruption is an expected normal occurrence if Cairns Complex were to experience a power interruption during any power failure. If normal power is interrupted there is a time frame in which the generator needs to start up to reestablish emergency power. This is not a simultaneous power transfer. Although critical equipment is plugged into emergency receptacles there is a delay in transferring power to the generator. Most critical equipment require a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) a device that ensures a smooth transition from the loss of normal power to emergency generator power without an interruption. As well interruptions to all laboratory supply and exhaust systems, and fume hood exhaust will occur as part of this testing during these earlier hour tests.

Please arrange to have any on-going experiments within any fume hood stabilized and ensure all chemicals are sealed and properly stored. Occupants may also hear various alarms on the Level 500 during this time. If all testing cannot be finished during this time frame, testing will continue Friday May 1, 2015 between the same hours. All normal power and activity for the Cairns Complex are expected to back on line for 8:00am. Testing will go on throughout the day, but after 8:00am any testing done will only affect areas of the CL3 laboratory.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact or John Clutterbuck, Cairns’ Facility Supervisor at x3999 or email jclutterbuck@brocku.ca or Facilities Management Customer Service at x3717 or email facilitiesmanagement@brocku.ca

Annual Main Campus Switch from Heating to Cooling
Posted April 14, 2015
Facilities Management trade staff are busy preparing the Main Campus cooling systems at the central chilling plant for summer operation. Due to the type of heating and cooling system that is used here at Brock University many buildings on the Main Campus are not capable of heating and cooling during the same cycle. With the arrival of unseasonably warm temperatures and with outside temperatures at night remaining below 10 degrees Celsius, building heating at this time of year still remains a priority. As we experience typical spring time daily cycles of low night time temperatures and higher day time temperatures, some areas on the Main Campus will experience higher than normal temperatures during regular office hours. Facilities Management staff will continue to make the Main Campus as comfortable as possible by bringing in cool fresh air into the areas that are normally cooled by the central chilling plant unit until night time heating is no longer required.

If your area experiences cooling issues please refrain from operating any heat producing equipment which is not necessary and shut off any lighting that is not required. Offices with windows should close blinds when possible to keep out radiant heat.

If your area is experiencing any extreme or ongoing cooling issues please notify Facilities Management at x3717 or facilitiesmanagement@brocku.ca or David McArthur, Associate Director, Maintenance & Utilities at dmcarthur@brocku.ca so the situation may be investigated.

Information Regarding Cluster Flies - Schmon Tower

Posted October 20, 2014
Every spring and fall the occupants in the Schmon Tower notice an increase of flies. These flies are Cluster flies and they typically live outdoors. In the fall they migrate towards warmth and in the spring they attempt to return to the outdoors. These flies are different than the house fly which consumes trash and debris. They do not carry disease and are not in the building due to poor housekeeping, but are seeking warmth. Their larvae consume earth worms to survive and adults feed on plant material. As such, these flies do not multiply while they are indoors.

Repair work to the exterior caulking and window sealing to help prevent the immigration of the flies has been identified on the University’s Deferred Maintenance list, but the work is not anticipated to start this year. In the meantime, Custodial Services will be cleaning the window sills in the Schmon Tower on a routine basis. Per discussions with Health, Safety & Wellness, fly treatment will not be applied. The cluster flies have a short life span and the solution only shortens their life span by a day. Fly strips are available upon request by contacting Facilities Management Customer Service at facilities.management@brocku.ca

If you have any comments please contact Bryan Cober, Structural Services Manager at x3290 or at bcober@brocku.ca.
