This interdisciplinary program is offered as a Combined Major by the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures. Courses are taught in English and cover the literatures and cultures of Western Europe, as well as Romance Linguistics. French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish texts are read in translation and assignments are completed in English. Given that knowledge of a second language is essential for an appreciation of the literatures and cultures under study, students in this program will be required to complete one first-year language credit.

The requirements for graduation with a BA (Honours) are a minimum 70 percent major average and a minimum 60 percent non-major average. The requirements for a BA with Major are a minimum 60 percent major average and a minimum 60 percent overall average.

This degree fits into the tradition of Comparative Literature programs and would form an excellent preparation for the MA in Studies in Comparative Literatures and Arts.

Program Notes
  1. Students must complete a first-year language credit in one of French Studies, German, Iberian and Latin American Studies or Italian Studies within first 10.0 credits.
  2. Students co-majoring in French Studies, Iberian and Latin American Studies or Italian Studies may not use the first-year language credit both for their combined major in French Studies, Italian Studies or Iberian and Latin American Studies and the SCLC requirement.
  3. All Honours students must apply to year four. Major research paper (SCLC 4P11) is required for all fourth-year Honours students. Students in the BA with Major program must take SCLC 4P10.
  4. In 20 credit degree programs a maximum of eight credits may be numbered 1(alpha)00 to 1(alpha)99; at least three credits must be numbered 2(alpha)90 or above; at least three credits must be numbered 3(alpha)90 or above; and the remaining credits must be numbered 2(alpha) or above.
In some circumstances, in order to meet university degree and program requirements, more than 20 credits may be taken.
