Fellowships, Scholarships, Bursaries, Awards and Financial Assistance

Various forms of financial support are available to graduate students. In addition to the scholarships and awards listed below, Brock awards fellowships, bursaries and teaching assistantships to incoming and full-time returning students on the basis of academic merit. Students' admission letters are accompanied by a Student Financial Funding Information Form that outlines, where appropriate, their particular graduate funding package.

Students are notified by email of all scholarship and award competitions for which applications are required. Graduate students are encouraged to apply for any of the awards and scholarships for which they are eligible.

To be eligible to apply for internal and external awards, scholarships and bursaries, graduate students must be registered as a full-time student. A student who is withdrawn from the university or has a change of status will have their scholarship eligibility reviewed and possibly withdrawn.

Brock University Internal Scholarships and Awards

G. Ronald Brown Graduate Award
Value: to be determined
An annual award to a full-time student in good standing, in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science who has demonstrated financial need. Established in 2002 in memory of Dean Ron Brown. Applicants must complete a bursary application, available from the Graduate Studies website: http://www.brocku.ca/gradstudies/forms/. The award will be made by the Brock University Senate Committee on Graduate Studies, based on the recommendation of the Dean 'or designate' of the Faculty of Mathematics and Science. The value of the award will be calculated as the interest earnings from the endowment contributed by the family and friends of Ron Brown and the faculty and staff of Brock University.

Distinguished Graduating Student Award
Value: $100.
Awarded to the most distinguished graduate for each graduate program. The prize and a certificate will be awarded at the Chancellor's luncheon at Convocation.

Excellence in Research Award
Value: $1,250
Awarded annually in May to two full-time graduate students at the Master's or Doctoral level who have demonstrated excellence in research. Students are eligible for the award if they are actively engaged in thesis research. Candidates for the award will be nominated by the graduate program in March, and recipients will receive acknowledgment at the Spring convocation.

John Edds Prize in Master of Accountancy
Value: $400.00
An annual award to a student who has demonstrated academic excellence in the Master of Accountancy program. The candidate will be selected by the Master of Accountacy Committee.

Faculty of Education Fellowships
Value: $1,500
A maximum of three graduate fellowships are awarded each year to new and continuing full-time students in the Master of Education program who have achieved high academic standing. Prospective candidates for fellowships will be considered on application for admission to the Master of Education program. Continuing students will be considered after successful completion of their first year of study. In order to qualify, students must be registered as full-time students.

Faculty of Education Graduate Bursary
Value: $1,000
A number of graduate bursaries are awarded each year to continuing full-time students in the Master of Education program who are experiencing financial difficulties. Only one such bursary can be obtained during the student's MEd program. Application details and deadlines can be obtained from the Faculty of Education. Applicants must provide evidence of on-going participation in the program, a statement outlining financial need, and a reference letter from a full-time faculty member describing the student's academic progress.

The Gordon R. Finlay Scholarship

An annual award to an outstanding graduate student in chemistry who has an excellent record in research, course work and demonstrating. Preference will be given to international students.

The David Goicoechea Award

An annual award to a student who has graduated from the Brock undergraduate degree
program in Philosophy and is entering into the Brock Master's program in Philosophy. The recipient must meet OSAP residency requirements and demonstrate financial need. The candidate will be selected by the Brock University Senate Committee on Graduate Studies, based on the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Philosophy.

Richard L. Hearn Scholarship

An annual award to a full-time graduate student in the first or subsequent year of a graduate degree in Physics who has achieved high academic standing. Established in 1989 in memory of Dr. Richard L. Hearn, Brock University's first Chancellor.

The Thompson-Harrison Graduate Scholarship
Value: $1,250
The recipient will be an international student studying physics at the graduate level who has achieved a high academic standing in-course and whose studies are not fully funded by his/her government. Should no physics international graduate student qualify, the scholarship will be awarded to a top chemistry graduate student, qualifying under the same conditions. In the event that no international student qualifies, the scholarship will be awarded, in the first instance, to a physics student who has attained a high academic standing on entry or in-course. Should no physics student qualify, the scholarship will be awarded to a chemistry student, qualifying under the same conditions.

Ralph D. Morris Graduate Student Award

An annual award to a student in the first or second year of graduate studies at Brock who has been involved in university activities which reflect well on graduate students or extra-curricular activities that enhance the Brock University's role in the community.

Professor John R. A. Mayer Graduate Scholarship

An award made annually to a graduate student in the Master's degree program in Philosophy who has the highest academic standing. Wendy Murphy Memorial Award
Value: $1000
The award will be made annually to a returning Psychology graduate student based on consistent academic excellence and collegiality. The candidate will be nominated by a selection committee appointed by the Psychology Department.

Niagara District Chartered Accountants Association Award in Master of Accounting
Value: $1000
Awarded to a student entering the Master of Accounting (MAcc) program with the highest entering average and demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to students from the Niagara Region. President's Surgite Award
Value: to be determined, plus a Certificate of Recognition
The award is intended to recognize those students who have been outstanding in one or more of the following areas: the applicant must demonstrate exemplary leadership in a student club, organization, association or team; they must have done something exceptional that helped to advance Brock's academic reputation; they may have made a significant contribution to student life at Brock and/or provided a valuable service to Brock or the broader community. The application forms for this award are available from the Student Awards & Financial Aid Office (ST 402). Fall Award application forms are accepted from September 1-October 15 and the Winter Award application forms are accepted from January 1-February 15.

Dr. G.M.C. Sprung Memorial Award
Value: to be determined
An award made annually to a graduate student in the Master's degree program in Philosophy who has achieved a minimum average of 75%. The candidate will be nominated by the Philosophy program.

The Governor General's Gold Medal
The Governor General's Gold Medal is awarded at Spring convocation to a graduate student who achieves the highest academic standing in a graduate degree program. Graduands from both the Spring and the previous Fall convocation are eligible. The medal will be awarded on the recommendation of the Senate Committee on Graduate Studies.

Jack Noble Book Prize
The book prize is awarded every year at both the Spring and Fall convocations to a Master of Education student who achieves the highest academic standing in the MEd program. The prize is awarded in the name of Jack Noble on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

External Scholarships

Commonwealth Scholarships

The Commonwealth scholarship plan provides opportunities for Commonwealth students to pursue advanced studies in other commonwealth countries. The scholarships are awarded to graduates of recognized universities for a period of two academic years and will cover the holder's travel, living and study expenses during the period of tenure. Commonwealth scholarships tenable at Canadian universities are open to commonwealth citizens other than residents of Canada. Citizens of commonwealth countries should make application in their own country for commonwealth scholarships tenable at Canadian universities. Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario Research Master's Studentship Awards
Value: $18,000 per annum for 2 years

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario is continuing to offer a limited number of Master's Studentship awards to highly qualified candidates who have completed or are in the last year of a Baccalaureate degree. Candidates will undertake full-time training in cardiovascular/cerebrovascular research under an identified academic supervisor.

Please note that graduates possessing a medical degree must apply to the national HSF Fellowship program. Candidates must not hold another major award concurrently.The awardee may not have held a prior faculty appointment. The Master's studentships are tenable at Ontario universities to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada studying in Ontario who have achieved a minimum of 80% on course work completed in the last two years of study. Applicants may already be enrolled in a Master's program. The duration of the award will then be adjusted to accurately reflect the remaining period of study.

Awards will take effect only after the recipient has registered full-time in an eligible (i.e., relevant to cardiovascular/cerebrovascular research) Master's program. Mackenzie King Scholarships Awards

The Mackenzie King Open Scholarship is open to graduates of any Canadian university who engage in (commence or continue) postgraduate study in any field, in Canada or elsewhere. It's value has been $7,000 but is subject to change.

The Mackenzie King Travelling Scholarship is open to graduates of any Canadian university who engage in (commence or continue) postgraduate study, in the United States or the United Kingdom, of international relations or industrial relations (including the international or industrial relations aspects of law, history, politics and economics). Four Travelling Scholarships of $9,000 have lately been awarded annually, but the number and value of the scholarships are subject to change. The awards will be based on high academic achievements (all A's or very nearly so), personal qualities and demonstrated aptitudes. Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)

NSERC is a national funding organization that invests in Canada's capability in science and technology in the natural sciences and in engineering. NSERC offers Postgraduate Scholarships (PGS) which provide financial support to high-calibre scholars who are engaged in Master's or Doctoral programs in the natural sciences or engineering. This support allows these scholars to fully concentrate on their studies and to seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields.

PGS Master's awards are valued at $17,300 (for one year)
PGS Doctoral awards are valued at $21,000 (for up to 3 years)

The Government of Canada has recently offered the prestigious Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) program. The scholarships are awarded through national competitionsheld by each of the three federal granting agencies to allow a greater number of excellent students to pursue graduate studies in Canada. Thirty percent of the award recipients are students in the natural sciences and engineering. The CGS program assists in ensuring a reliable supply of highly qualified personnel to meet the needs of Canada's knowledge economy.

CGS Master's awards are valued at $17,500 (for one year)
CGS Doctoral awards are valued at $35,000 (for up to 3 years)

Industrial Postgraduate Scholarships (IPS) provide financial support for highly qualified science and engineering graduates. The support allows them to gain research experience in industry while undertaking advanced studies in Canada. These scholarships are aimed at encouraging scholars to consider research careers in industry where they will be able to contribute to strengthening Canadian innovation.

NSERC IPS: $15,000/year for up to two years plus company contribution of $6,000 minimum a year.

The Social Sciences of Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) is an arm's-length federal agency that promotes and supports university-based research and training in the social sciences and humanities.

SSHRC offers Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) which provide financial support to the most outstanding eligible scholars pursuing master's or doctoral studies in a Canadian university. The Government of Canada established these prestigious scholarships, to be awarded through national competitions by the granting agencies, to ensure a reliable supply of highly qualified personnel to meet the needs of Canada's knowledge economy. Canada Graduate Scholars will help renew faculty at Canadian universities and will be the research leaders of tomorrow.

CGS Doctoral Scholarships: $35,000 per annum for 3 years
SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships: $19,000 per annum for 6 to 48 months
If you are a citizen or permanent resident of Canada, have completed or are about to complete a master's degree in the humanities or social sciences or are already pursuing a PhD or equivalent, you may be eligible to apply for a Doctoral Fellowship.

CIHR Canada Graduate Scholarships Master's Awards
Value: $17, 500 per year

The Canada Graduate Scholarships Master's Awards administered by CIHR are intended to provide special recognition and support to students who are pursuing a Master's degree in a health related field in Canada. These candidates are expected to have an exceptionally high potential for future research achievement and productivity.

Ontario Graduate Scholarships
Value: $5,000 per academic term

The Province of Ontario offers scholarships (in conjunction with Brock University) to students in or entering graduate programs. The Scholarships are tenable at the Ontario university of the student's choice. The awards are tenable in all disciplines and the applicant must have high academic achievement and meet certain citizenship requirements. Rhodes Scholarships Awards
These Scholarships are tenable at the University of Oxford, England. They are granted for two years with the possibility of a third year. A candidate must be a Canadian citizen or a person domiciled in Canada. The candidate must have been born between October 2, 1981 and October 1, 1987. The candidate must have received an undergraduate degree before taking up the scholarship, except for medical students. The qualities which will be considered in making the selection are: literary and scholastic attainment; fondness and success in outdoor sports, qualities of truthfulness, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship; exhibition of moral force of character and of instincts to lead and to take an interest in one's contemporaries. Qualities of both character and intellect are the most important requirements for a Rhodes Scholarship. Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarship Awards
Value: $35,000 per annum for 3 years

All students who are a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant pursuing full-time doctoral studies in Canada and exceptionally to Canadians who are pursuing full-time doctoral studies at a foreign institution. To be eligible for consideration by the Foundation, candidates must be applying into the first year of a doctoral program, or must be registered in the first or second year of such a program. Candidates must be enrolled in or must have completed a degree program at the nominating institution, or must be enrolled in or applying to a doctoral program there.

Government Student Loans
Ontario Student Assistance Program and Canada Student Loan Program All students who are residents of Ontario, Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada and who satisfy the admission requirements of a Canadian university or an eligible post-secondary institution in Ontario may apply for a loan under this program. To receive a loan a student must establish financial need for assistance and enrol in an eligible institution in the year of the loan.
