Promoting Positive Behavior Support for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities and Adults with ASD:
Evidence-Based Strategies

April 20, 2012, 9:00-4:30, Pond Inlet, Brock University, St. Catharines, ON

This workshop will describe evidence-based means of promoting positive behavior support (PBS) for adults with intellectual disabilities and adults with ASD. Initially an overview of PBS will be described along with what constitutes the evidence base underlying PBS strategies for enhancing desired lifestyles and reducing challenging behavior. Characteristics of residential and day support environments that facilitate staff application of PBS will then be summarized, with a focus on promoting individual enjoyment, participation in meaningful activities, and ongoing opportunities for skill development and application. Key PBS strategies for preventing and reducing challenging behavior will likewise be described including, for example, establishing relationships, therapeutic interaction styles of support staff, ways to enhance enjoyment during daily activities, and practical means of responding to challenging behavior in light of identified factors that lead to such behavior. Throughout the discussion quick and effective means of training staff in key PBS skills will be presented as well as evidence-based supervisory approaches for supporting routine staff application of PBS and where necessary, helping staff improve their application.   This workshop is appropriate for professionals, supervisors and staff working with adults with intellectual disabilities and those with ASD
*CADS is a BACB approved continuing education provider and seven Type 2 credits for BCBAs and BCaBAs can be earned at no extra charge for documented attendance for the full workshop.
