History of the Black Community in Niagara with Dr. Wilma Morrison
Do you know who has received the Lieutenant-Governor’s Heritage Award, the Hamilton Black History Award of Merit, the Order of Ontario, an Honorary Doctorate from Brock University, and enough other awards to fill a display cabinet? It’s Dr. Wilma Morrison, BURA’s guest speaker for January. “For years, Morrison has tirelessly educated people about Niagara’s role in the Underground Railroad that allowed American slaves in the 1800s a chance to escape and start a new life in Canada. Morrison has been the driving force behind the Norval Johnson Library on Peer Street and the restored British Methodist Episcopal Church” (QMI Agency 30.01.2011). Please join us for this special event when Dr. Morrison addresses our community of retirees.
Time: 11:45, for noon
Venue: St. Giles Presbyterian Church, 205 Linwell Road, between Geneva and Lake Streets

2002 Winemaker of the Year: Sue-Ann Staff
Sue-Ann Staff is a fifth generation grape grower and 2002 Ontario Winemaker of the Year. She notes that she feels privileged to have grown up learning to love the land, the joy of the harvest, and the pleasure of wine from grandparents and parents. Her formal wine education took her to the University of Adelaide to put science and art behind her passion for wine, and now she states, “I have the good fortune to make wine on my family's 200 year old estate in Jordan, Canada, from grapes we have tended.” The specific title of her presentation to BURA will be announced in the next newsletter.
