Wading Pool Attendant

Wading Pool Attendant certification offers vocational training that prepares lifesavers to safeguard wading pools. Includes recognition of hazards and risks, day-to-day operations, first aid, shallow-water spinals, facility analysis, surveillance positioning, scanning and victim recognition, emergency procedures and communications.

Prerequisites: 14 years of age, Emergency First Aid with CPR B*; Bronze Medallion recommended.

Lifeguarding Courses

National Lifeguard Service (NLS)
The NLS award is provided by the Lifesaving Society and is Canada's only nationally recognized lifeguard certification program. National Lifeguard is a legal certificate for lifeguarding throughout the country, and the only lifeguard certificate recognized by the province of Ontario. Training consists of core material plus content specific to the working pool environment.

Prerequisites: 16 years of age by the exam date; Bronze Cross; Standard First Aid*

Cost: $231 (Brock student/member); $236 (non member)

National Lifeguard Recertification

Ontario Health Regulations require lifeguards to recertify every 2 years. Previous NLS certification does not need to be current to recertify. Participants must bring proof of previous NLS certification and photo ID.

Swim Instructor Courses

LSS Assistant Instructor

Through classroom learning and in-water practice, the Lifesaving Society Assistant Instructor Course prepares candidates to help certified instructors with swimming and lifesaving classes. Candidates are introduced to key principles of learning and teaching, and they master basic progressions. The roles and responsibilities of instructors and their assistants are emphasized.

Prerequisites: 14 years of age by the end of the course; Bronze Cross (or higher)

LSS Swim Instructor & Lifesaving Instructor

These two courses are offered together. After successful completion, candidates will be certified to teach the Lifesaving Society's "Swim for Life" program and the "Bronze Family" of courses.

The Swim Instructor course prepares the instructor to teach and evaluate the swimming strokes and related skills found in the Swim for Life program (Parent & Tot, Preschool, Swimmer, and Adult Swimmer). Candidates acquire proven teaching methods, planning skills, and a variety of stroke development drills and correction techniques.

The Lifesaving Instructor course prepares instructors to teach Canadian Swim Patrol, Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, Wading Pool Attendant, Lifesaving Fitness, Distinction, Diploma, Basic/Emergency First Aid, and CPR-A/B/C.

Prerequisites: 16 years of age before last day of course; Assistant Instructor; Bronze Cross or NLS.

Advanced Instructor, Examiner & Supervisor Courses

Advanced Instructor (AI) & Exam Standards Clinic (ESC)

The Advanced Instructor Course provides additional training for instructors who wish to teach the advanced awards including National Lifeguard and Standard First Aid. Advanced Instructor certification is good for life and never needs to be recertified.

Prerequisite: Lifesaving Instructor; experience instructing Bronze-level courses is recommended

 

National Lifeguard Instructor

After successful participation in the National Lifeguard Instructor Course, NLS Instructors are certified to teach all options of the National Lifeguard certification (Core, Pool, Waterpark, Waterfront, Surf).

Prerequisites: NLS; Lifesaving Instructor; Advanced Instructor

 

First Aid Instructor

First Aid Instructors are certified to teach Standard First Aid certifications. First aid instructors already certified by a recognized agency may apply for Lifesaving Society accreditation without taking the First Aid Instructor course.

Prerequisites: Standard First Aid*; Lifesaving Instructor; Advanced Instructor

 

Aquatic Supervisor Training (AST)

For deck-level supervisory staff, this course provides the knowledge and skills (beyond NLS) to manage a safe aquatic environment.

Prerequisites: NLS or Lifesaving Instructor; 100 hours experience as a lifeguard and/or instructor

 

*Only Lifesaving Society, Canadian Red Cross, St. John Ambulance, or Canadian Ski Patrol are acceptable first aid certification providers for the purposes of meeting the requirements of the Lifesaving Society's leadership courses.
