First Aid & AED
The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board recognizes the Lifesaving Society's (LSS) Standard- and Emergency First Aid programs. The first aid programs also satisfy the first aid requirements of the Ontario Public Pools Regulation and meets the requirements of the Canada Labour Code, Part II.
Unless otherwise noted, first aid courses offered at Brock University are provided by the LSS.
LSS Standard First Aid with CPR C and Anaphylaxis Rescuer
Standard First Aid with CPR C: provides comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR. Standard First Aid incorporates all the content of Emergency First Aid. Therefore, it is not necessary to take any other course as a pre-requisite. This course is designed for those who require a more in-depth understanding of first aid including: legal implications of first aid treatment, spinal injuries, heat or cold injuries, bone and joint injuries, abdominal and chest injuries, burns, and medical emergencies. CPR-C covers all aspects of CPR skills and theory for adults, children, and infants. Standard First Aid is required as a prerequisite for National Lifeguard (NLS).
Anaphylaxis Rescuer: Anaphylaxis awareness has grown significantly in school boards, municipal recreation centres, camps, day care centres and the general public. With proper training, people can learn how to use an auto-injector with confidence. The recognition and first aid treatment for anaphylaxis are covered, along with prevention and risk management. Anaphylaxis Rescuer certification is included with Standard First Aid courses at Brock.

Recertification: LSS Standard First Aid with CPR C (including Anaphylaxis Rescuer)
Holders of Standard First Aid (SFA) certificates from other agencies may not recertify their certificate at a Lifesaving Society (LSS) recertification course. They may recertify only with the original certifying agency or take the LSS SFA full course (dates & times listed above).
Standard First Aid recertification procedure: SFA award holders may recertify their LSS certification only once on a certification course. Subsequently, award holders must repeat the full course. Thereafter, individuals may renew by alternating recertifications and original courses.

LSS Emergency First Aid with CPR B
For people who want a general knowledge of first aid principles and the emergency treatment of injuries. Skills include: victim assessment, rescue breathing, choking, and what to do for external bleeding, heart attack, and stroke. CPR B, targetted to parents, grandparents, babysitters, or childcare workers, teaches the CPR and choking procedures for adults and children. CPR B certification is included in Emergency First Aid. Please note: for those that are preparing for their NLS (National Lifeguard), you will need to take Standard First Aid instead. Prerequisite: None.

LSS Automated External Defibrillation (AED)
Builds on the skills learned in CPR and first aid courses. AED provides knowledge of how the heart works and what goes wrong when defibrillation is required. Prerequisite: any LSS CPR or First Aid certification.
