The Family Relations Lab at Brock University
is currently investigating the help that
is exchanged between mothers and their adult
daughters. Past research in this area
has been focussed on the help that adult sons
and daughters give to older parents who are
ill or dying. This work has, for the most
part, ignored helping that occurs when parents
are still relatively healthy, as well as the
help that parents may give to their adult
children (e.g. child care). |
|
|
As a result, one of the goals of our project
is to examine the help, advice, and support
that relatively healthy mothers and their
adult daughters give to and receive from one
another. We're also interested in hearing
women's views on this topic -- we have heard
from others that giving and receiving help
can lead to both positive and negative feelings
for women, but we don't really know much about
what causes those feelings, or how mothers
and daughters deal with them. We hope that
by learning more about mother-daughter helping,
we will be in a better position to promote
positive helping experiences between generations. |
At this time, we would like
to hear from mothers and daughters who are
interested in taking part in this project.
To participate, a mother and one of her daughters
will need to come to Brock together on one
occasion to be interviewed and complete some
questionnaires. We pay each woman $40.00 (forty
dollars) for her time (2-3 hours). Free parking
is available at Brock, and is located across
the road from the Family Relations Lab. |

If you are a daughter and would like to
take part in this study with your mother,
please note that you must live within a one
hour's drive of one another in order to participate.
Mothers wishing to take part with their daughters
must be over the age of 65 and living alone
in their own home (e.g., house, apartment,
or senior's residence). If you are interested
in learning more about this project - without
any obligation to participate - please contact
ext. 4996 or
email familylab@brocku.ca. |
