Seminar Leader/Teaching Assistant (paid position)
Some courses in the department hire undergraduate students as TAs. There are several important things to keep in mind when applying for a position as a TA. First, being a TA is a big responsibility. You will be expected to be on time, be well prepared for seminars, be available to your students during your office hours, keep records of grades, etc. Of course you will get paid to be a seminar leader; however, it is more than just a job. For one thing, being a seminar leader will help you to learn psychology much better than you otherwise might. It is said sometimes that the best way to learn something is to teach it, and your seminar leading experience will probably prove this to you. Obviously, you can gain great experience working as a seminar leader, and this experience looks very impressive on your resume, whether you are planning on entering the workforce or applying for graduate school.
All of the TAs at Brock University belong to the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 4207. If you would like to be a seminar leader, available positions and application instructions (including the online application form) are available on the Human Resources website .
If you are interested in being a TA for courses offered in the fall/winter term, these positions are normally posted on the Human Resources website in June. Please note that there is a deadline by which applications for all positions in the department for the upcoming academic year (both D2 and D3) must be received. This deadline is usually in mid-July. Also, don't forget that TAs are needed for the spring session. These positions are usually posted in February or March. Check the department homepage for more information on postings and application deadlines.
Third year students are particularly encouraged to apply for the PSYC 1F90 TA positions. Interviews for PSYC 1F90 are usually conducted in late August. Contact Tammy at psyc1F90@brocku.ca for more information on PSYC 1F90 interviews.
If you have been successful in obtaining a TA position, please fill out a TA Contract Information Form, available from Joanne in the main office. This form provides the information needed to process a contract for you, but it is NOT your contract. Joanne will contact you when your contract is ready. Please come in to pick it up from the department, sign it, and return it to HR (located in the Schmon Tower, 12th floor). The faster you return your contract, the faster you will be paid.
