Welcome to the Faculty of Social Sciences
The Faculty of Social Sciences at Brock University is home to a diverse and vibrant group of scholars, staff and students dedicated to excellence in teaching, learning, research, and service to community and society. We are the largest Faculty at Brock with 5,000 undergraduate majors, 400 graduate students, more than 150 full-time faculty members, 35 staff and numerous contract instructors and teaching and/or research assistants. In addition to traditional social science disciplines such as economics, geography, political science, psychology, and sociology, we offer a wide range of interdisciplinary programs in applied disabilities, applied linguistics, child and youth studies, business communications, business economics, film studies, labour studies, media, popular culture, social justice, sustainability science, tourism management, and women’s and gender studies. In addition to our wide range of undergraduate degrees, most programs offer opportunities for post-graduate studies.
This rich mix provides opportunities to learn applied approaches to specific issues and problems, as well as for the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake. Students in our faculty acquire important work-related skills such as: data analysis techniques, research methods, critical thinking, working collaboratively to solve problems, and persuasive speaking. These skills provide a better understanding of how cultural, economic, political, psychological, and social phenomena influence human behavior. Our graduates gain the theoretical and practical knowledge to live an informed life, improve their communities, and make the world a better place.
Our faculty members are nationally and internationally known in their respective research areas and include many award-winning teachers, including nationally recognized 3M award winners. Most of our introductory courses combine small group seminars with larger lectures. Many of our senior-level courses are seminars that encourage small group debates and discussions between professors and students. Our academic advisors and staff are experienced in the planning of programs tailored to student interests and needs.
I invite you to explore our exciting course offerings. You can get directly from this website to the Departments, Centres and programs in the Faculty of Social Sciences for specific information.
