What safety systems are in place at the High Ropes Course?
For our high ropes course and climbing wall, we use a harness and rope belay system to ensure safety. Our harnesses are fabricated out of the same material that seat belts are created from and are inspected before each program. A safety rope is connected to each climbers harness and is strung through a belay cable overhead (these belay cables can hold over 7000 kg - approximately the weight of three elephants). The rope is then threaded through a special belay device that creates friction on the rope. A designated staff "belayer" maintains the end of the rope. Every rope is thoroughly checked before use.
Our Ropes Course Manager inspects and documents all Youth University low ropes elements, the high ropes course, and the climbing wall on a regular basis. We also obtain an annual detailed course inspection by a recognized Ropes Course Building Company.

Every participant has a different level of comfort with "perceived risk"; everyone has different likes and dislikes. Although we encourage participants to challenge what they can and cannot do - participants are never stretched beyond their comfort level. To support this, Youth University operates under the policy of Challenge by Choice. Challenge by Choice means that individuals choose their level of challenge. This means that individuals may not buy out of an activity entirely but rather that they are encouraged to find a role that will fit within their comfort zone.
Due to the limited number of dates available, we recommend booking your dates as soon as you can.
Your field trip to Youth University will take place primarily outside, and as you know, the weather is something we can not control. Students may not be used to dressing appropriately for an entire day outside and inappropriate clothing may negatively influence their experience. They will need your to adequately prepare for a great day at Youth University! All students should come with plenty of water, food and snacks to fuel body.
- HOT Weather: Students should come prepared for hot/sunny weather with plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat and light breathable clothing.
- COLD Weather: During the fall and winter students should come prepared with a winter hat, gloves or mittens, a winter jacket (water resistant or water proof ), warm pants (wind pants, rain pants or snow pants are suggested – cotton and jeans is not advised because they can become wet and are not wind proof), and long underwear. Change facilities will be provided to accommodate changing and adjusting layers of clothing.
