Neil McCartney became Brock’s senior academic operating officer on 1 Dec. 2013. He had previously served as Dean of the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, an appointment that first brought him to Brock in August 2011.
Prior to that, McCartney — a renowned researcher with an international reputation for his work on human aging, cardiac rehabilitation and spinal cord injury — had been chair of McMaster University’s Department of Kinesiology, and director of McMaster’s Centre for Health Promotion and Rehabilitation.
McCartney (BEd ‘74, Exeter University, UK; PhD ‘83, McMaster University) was a founding member of the Canadian Association of Cardiac Rehabilitation. He is also a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Prevention.
In 2009, the provincial government appointed McCartney to the Transitional Council of the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario, where he was subsequently elected as its vice-president. The council creates the infrastructure, rules and regulations of this soon-to-be-established health care college.
In 1993, McCartney was a visiting scholar at Stanford University in Palo Alta, Calif. He has co-authored or contributed chapters to 10 books, and has been the lead or contributing researcher for more than 80 journal articles.
Position Profile - Provost and Vice-President, Academic
The Provost and Vice President, Academic is the chief academic officer at Brock University. The Provost is the principal advisor to the President on all academic affairs, serving as the highest-ranking officer after the President and serves as the Acting President in the President’s absence.
The Provost and Vice President, Academic is an ex-officio member of Senate and Senate committees, Committee of Deans and provides representation with external agencies dealing with research and graduate studies.
Key operations of the Office of the Provost and Vice President, Academic include:
- Academic planning and the development of new academic programs and the maintenance of the highest standards of excellence and quality of those programs and services.
- Promote innovation; collaboration; excellence in research, scholarship and teaching; and a culture of transparency
- Providing leadership in the administration of the academic units reporting to the Provost including Faculties, Library, Registrar's Office and Student Services
- Lead in the development and implementation of the University’s operating budget
- Representation of the academic budgetary needs, and the allocation and administration of the budget for academic units.
