This summer and fall, the IRC has been busily ordering, sorting, and organizing resource materials for teachers and community members purchased through an Autism Speaks Canada Family Services Community Grant applied for by Dr. Kimberly Maich in the Department of Teacher Education. This grant, entitled "Peer Awareness for Preservice Teachers" focuses on the provision of resources and professional development for preservice teachers at Brock University.
Purchased resources include picture books to help peers of students with ASD understand that we are all the same, and we are all different (e.g., Looking after Louis), adolescent-level titles (such as Look Me in the Eye) in, and audiovisual resources, including "Temple Grandin".
Sets of all three types of resources have been purchased for the IRC at both Hamilton and St. Catharines campuses. All 2013 teacher candidates will be offered a collaborative professional development opportunity along with McMaster Children's Hospital on October 31 that will help to prepare them to offer peer awareness in their future classrooms to set the foundation of understanding, inclusion, and belonging.
