University officials say the handful of students relocated from Lowenberger Residence after a small fire on Monday night (April 23) will not be disrupted in writing their exams.
Fewer than 30 students from Lowenberger were relocated to other residence rooms following the incident around 9 pm Monday.
Nobody was injured and damage, mostly caused by smoke, was contained to the fourth-floor room after some paper, allegedly set alight in a bathroom, ignited surrounding materials and triggered the fire alarm. The St. Catharines Fire Department responded and the fire was quickly extinguished.
The fourth floor of Lowenberger remains closed for cleaning and ventilation. Because most students have complete their exams for the term, the residence was mostly vacated. The final exams will be written on Wednesday afternoon, and students will have vacated the residences by the following afternoon.
Niagara Regional Police have charged a student who lived in the residence with arson in connection with the fire.
