Welcome to Brock University’s Faculty of Mathematics and Science. Having just arrived at Brock myself I can’t help but share what I have already come to know about the Faculty and I am confident you too will encounter the same – It has a strong track record of undergraduate teaching and an ever growing reputation for discovery, innovation and research excellence.
The fundamental belief is that we are here to provide the resources needed for our students to succeed – often summed up by the statement “It’s your future, we’ll help you get there”. So please join us for an exceptional learning experience – both scientifically and socially.
This innovative community of faculty and staff are dedicated and supportive because they see students as an investment in the future. We have developed and deliver programs and courses which provide knowledge and experiences that serve as a strong foundation for our students. Thus allowing them, as alumni, to take their place in this changing world where they are providing solutions for the present and benefits for the future of our community and overall quality of life. Our graduates are across the country and around the world in a variety of careers including doctors, dentists, academics, scientists, consultants, geologists and business leaders to name a few.
Our six departments and two centres offer a wide variety of programs (many with a co-op option) in the life sciences, physical sciences, computer science and mathematics. Specifically, the Department of Chemistry fosters dynamic research in synthetic, physical and computational chemistry and is, along with Biology, a pillar of the Biotechnology Program which formalizes interdisciplinary research at the boundary of the two sciences. In Computer Science a dedicated and approachable team prepare their students for employment, further study and life-long learning through a variety of programs and innovative research activities. The Department of Earth Sciences offer programs in Earth Science and Environmental Geoscience and conduct research in a number of areas throughout the Earth and on Mars and their enthusiastic cohort of students have excellent prospects of high-paying jobs after graduation. Within the Centre for Neuroscience nerve cells and the nervous system are studied and, ultimately, behaviour and its associated underlying neural mechanisms are investigated through 3 different streams of concentration: Neuropsychology, Neurobiology and Neuromotor systems. Over in the Department of Physics there is a dynamic, hands-on environment where you can do experimental and theoretical research in the fields of solid-state physics, materials science, biophysics and theoretical physics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
So take some time to explore all the Faculty has to offer and do not hesitate to contact my office if you require further information. For those of you that are perspective students, I encourage you to contact Heather Bellisario, the Faculty’s Liaison Officer, directly. She is a great resource who can arrange a personalized campus tour (including specific labs), answer program questions and even help you discover which program is best for you.
