Brock University receives $750,000 to help develop local businesses
Brock University thanks the Federal Government for research funding that will allow us to partner with local businesses to innovate and bring new products and processes to market.
Brock received the maximum $750,000 in funding as part of the Applied Research and Commercialization Program (ARC), supported by the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario — FedDev Ontario.
The funds, unveiled Nov. 12, 2010, will allow the University to work with small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in areas that include product and process applied research, engineering design, technology development, product testing, proof of concept, piloting and problem solving.
Projects eligible for ARC are open to almost all SMEs from Southwestern Ontario. SMEs are defined as companies with fewer than 1,000 employees.
“Programs like the Applied Research and Commercialization Initiative are critical to building a more innovative and versatile Canadian economy for the future,” said Dr. Ian Brindle, Vice-President Research at Brock University, in praising the federal involvement in this pilot project.
This program will allow the University to play an important role in helping local SME's compete on the national and international stage.
Many small companies do not have research and development resources, and this kind of support will help with their pre-commercialization needs and accelerate getting innovations to market.
The University is committed to helping transform the local economy. This funding allows Brock researchers to build partnerships with the community, it helps our students to get first-hand experience — and with the success of local companies it will lead to better career opportunities for young Canadians.
St. Catharines MP Rick Dykstra sees a bright future for small and medium-sized businesses from St. Catharines and across Niagara to avail themselves of the resources and expertise at Brock University.
"I am confident our community will reap the benefits in terms of job growth and economic stimulus," said Dykstra.
