Brock University Mathematics Mastery Project (BUMMP)

WELCOME Hard-Working Students!

BUMMP is a review of essential high-school mathematics, with topics taken primarily from Grade 12 Advanced Functions, with a little Grade 11 Functions also included.

BUMMP is designed to

• optimally prepare you for success in university calculus
• ensure that you master all the necessary mathematics skills so that you will succeed in your program

Research shows that the primary impediment to succeeding in university math, science, and other programs is insufficient math background. The Mathematics Skills Tests will help you diagnose which areas of math you need to work on, then give you the opportunity to demonstrate your mastery.

BUMMP consists of tutorial review material, homework practice sets, and timed tests (Mathematics Skills Tests). The topics included in the tests are:

Test 1: numerical calculations (order of operations, exponents, radicals, fractions, absolute values, inequalities), slope of a line, equation of a line, length and mid-point of a line segment, equation of a circle
Test 2: expanding and factoring algebraic expressions
Test 3: functions in general (function notation, domain and range, vertical-line test, compositions, graphs, transformations, symmetry, inverses), quadratic funtions, polynomial functions, rational functions
Test 4: exponential and logarithmic functions; solving equations involving exponential and logarithmic functions
Test 5: trigonometry (angles, radian measure, the unit circle, definitions of the trigonometric functions, solving right triangles, the sine and cosine laws); trigonometric functions and graphs, inverse trigonometric functions, identities, solving trigonometric equations
Test 6: solving equations and inequalities
Test 7: working with graphs; matching functions and their graphs

Each test also includes problem-solving. Each test is supported by (typically) 10 to 20 homework practice sets, so if your score on a test is not to your liking, you can use the homework practice problems to refresh your memory. You can try each test as many times as you like, so that you can build your understanding and eventually master each topic to whatever degree you wish.

It will help you enormously if you complete each of the SEVEN Math Skills Tests BEFORE you begin your university program. If you can't manage this, complete the tests as soon as you can, preferably before the end of the first week of classes. Don't wait until school starts in September to begin work, as you will quickly become extremely busy. You'll be much more efficient with your university studies if you make sure your math skills are in top shape! Therefore, don't settle for a mere pass; master each topic by making sure that you score highly on each test.

Remember: If you will be attending Brock University, and will be taking either Math 1P01 or Math 1P05, then the Math Skills Tests are mandatory for you. You'll need to score at least 70% on each of the 7 Math Skills Tests by about the end of the first week of classes. If you don't manage to meet this requirement, we strongly encourage you to register in our transitions course, Math 1P20. This will strengthen your skills in high-school mathematics, and allow you to continue with your program with confidence and greater success.

So work hard and master each topic!
