Why conversations and not lectures or seminars?
Conversations create a different type of learning experience based on the idea that no single person has the whole answer. Conversation Café will create an open space where everyone is a learner and provides an opportunity to share perspectives, thoughts and questions.
Do I need to prepare for a conversation?
No. Conversation Café does not require the participants to formally prepare for a conversation. A general interest in the topic and an open mind is all that is needed.
Do I have to be a university student?
No. The cafés are open to all members of the community regardless of their education. All perspectives are welcome.
Can I just listen or do I have to speak?
You are not required to speak during the conversations. Some participants will express their thoughts, while others will prefer to just listen. Reflecting is just as important.
Where do the conversations take place?
The conversations are held in local cafés, art galleries, and public parks that are free to the public, and accessible.
How long are the conversations?
Conversations are typically two hours in length.
Do I need to sign up for a conversations?
Most conversations do not require registration. When a conversation does require advance registration it will be clearly indicated on all materials.
How much does it cost to participate?
Nothing. All conversations are free however, donations are appreciated.
Who are the moderators?
Moderators are members of the community who have an interest in the particular topic. They are responsible for the structure and flow of the conversation.
Who are the guests?
The guest(s) are invited to present his/her perspective on the issue at hand. The guest is often highly knowledgeable on the topic or has had equal experience. He or she is not there to change opinions, but rather to get the conversational ball rolling.
How many participants will be there?
Typical conversations average an attendance of 20 to 30 people, however due to the casual nature of the event participation numbers may vary.
Can I suggest an idea for a conversation?
Yes. If you have ideas for future conversations do not hesitate to contact us. Please send your suggestions to email@example.com
I own/work for a great café, can we hold a Conversation Café here?
Brock University’s Conversation Café is always looking for new venues. Locations should easily accommodate groups of 30 to 50 people, be accessible by public transportation, free of charge, and preferably community-minded spaces. Contact us so we may visit the space.
