The NCO is excited to have presented its latest policy brief -- Barriers to Post-Secondary Education: Perspectives from Niagara -- researched and written by Kate Cassidy, the director of Community Learning and Youth University at Brock.
Dr. Cassidy uses interviews and focus groups to investigate what keeps young people in Niagara from pursuing a post-secondary education. In Niagara, 41 per cent of the population between the ages of 25 and 64 does not have a post-secondary education, higher than the provincial and national averages. This topic has huge implications for our community's economic prosperity and poverty reduction.
Thanks to all who participated in our discussion on Wednesday, March 4 and especially to the Welland YMCA for allowing us to host the event at its facility. Dr. Cassidy's policy brief, complete with references, is posted on the "Policy Briefs" page of our website, or by clicking on the above link.
The NCO is now working on several policy briefs for the upcoming 2015-16 year, including another look at Niagara voter turnout at federal elections, an analysis of the changing economic structure of our region (in partnership with the Niagara Workforce Planning Board), and a discussion of the importance of developing a knowledge economy in our region.
