James MacLellan named 2009 Distinguished Graduate

On November 17th, James MacLellan was named the 2009 recipient of the Brock University Faculty of Business' Distinghished Graduate award.  The Distinguished Graduate Award recognizes a former student who has excelled in business.

James graduated with a Bachelor of Administration degree in 1987.  Following graduation, he was employed by The Guarantee Company of North America in the Contract Surety Department as a financial analyst and then as surety claims adjuster.  In September 1990, James began law school at the University of Windsor and after graduating in 1993 was called to the bar in January 1995.  He has spent his legal career at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (formerly known as Borden & Elliott), Canada’s largest national law firm with  over 750 lawyers and offices in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Waterloo, Ottawa and Montreal.  James was made a Partner at BLG in 2001 where he specializes in construction and surety law .

"Mr. MacLellan’s success is representative of the quality of our students, faculty and programs."


James is an instructor for the Surety and Construction Law Course at the School of Continuing Studies – University of Toronto, sponsored by the Surety Association of Canada.  He is a long standing member of the executive of the Construction Law Section of the Ontario Bar Association and is currently serving as Chair. Mr.MacLellan is a frequent speaker at construction and surety industry conferences, including Canadian Construction Association, Surety Association of Canada and Building Innovation Leading Development (Residential Home Builders Association).


Mr.MacLellan has continued to maintain his ties with the Brock Faculty of Business through participation in the committee organizing the annual Faculty of Business Golf Tournament, which has in the past five years raised (together with provincial matching funds) approximately $100,000.00 for Brock business student programs and scholarships. 


James and his wife Heidi, also a graduate of Brock University, live in Oakville with their two children.
