The Avanti Chamber Singers present

“The Longing Spirit”

On Saturday, February 8, 2014, at 7:30 pm, the Avanti Chamber Singers perform both classics and premieres of new choral works expressing various forms of spiritual longing. Both choir and soloists are joined by an instrumental ensemble from the St. Catharines Chamber Music Society in a concert taking place at St. Barnabas Anglican Church in St. Catharines.

The first half of the program features J. S. Bach's intriguing Cantata 150 “I Long For Thee, O Lord,” one of the lesser known and more unusual of his cantatas. The audience will also hear a new Latin setting of Psalm 131 “De Profundis,” composed in grand Baroque style by Dr. Matthew Royal, Chair of the Department of Music at Brock University. Along with these two works, the choir and soprano soloist Melissa Shriner will perform excerpts from a new Requiem Mass composed by Brock alumnus Matthew Therrien.

The second half of the concert is an acknowledgement of Black History Month. The music of longing here features Afro-American spirituals and related choruses, several arranged by Niagara composers. Also included is a recent composition about Harriet Tubman, past resident of St. Catharines, and one of the principle figures associated with the Underground Railroad.

The Avanti Chamber Singers, based in St. Catharines, are conducted by Dr. Harris Loewen, Associate Professor in Brock University’s Department of Music. Loewen states, “The longing spirit is expressed in a variety of ways through the music of this program; the overall character is both poignant and profound, but the musical styles range from intimate and reflective to absolutely thrilling!”

Concerts in the Viva Voce Choral Series are presented by the Department of Music as a key part of the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts' mandate in building connections between the community and Brock University.
