On May 6 and 7 Brock University Faculty of Education, in partnership with the District School Board of Niagara, Mindshare Learning, Niagara Catholic District School Board and Niagara College, hosted CONNECT 2013: Canada’s National Learning and Technology Conference at the Scotiabank Convention Centre in Niagara Falls. Educators, researchers, learners and innovators explored new methods and modalities, as well as products and services to enhance the educational experience from kindergarten through to the post-secondary classroom.
The two-day conference featured more than 100 exhibitors and 21 start-ups – three of which are recipients of Federal Development grants to work with Brock University researchers. A vigorous pitch session hosted by Bob Cowan of Channel 11 News saw 23 companies and entrepreneurs present their best business pitch before a panel of investment experts.
Brock faculty, staff and students were on hand to present a number of workshops and interactive poster sessions, with the Faculty of Education especially well-represented. Brock University President Dr. Jack Lightstone joined the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology) (Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario) in opening the conference. Robert Herjavec (Herjavec Group) a Canadian businessman, investor, and television personality from hit shows Dragon’s Den and Shark Tank, gave the keynote address.
“We were proud to be an organizing partner in this unique event that for the first time in Canada, brought together all level of the education continuum to CONNECT, learn and grown,” said Dr. Camille Rutherford, a professor in the Faculty of Education.
“It was exciting to see over a thousand K-12 and higher education educators, educational administrators, and IT specialists from across the country come together under one roof to explore the latest educational technology innovations. We look forward to CONNECT 2014 when we can once again showcase Brock's commitment to 21st century teaching and learning.”
