Published on April 08 2013
Congratulations are extended to Marilyn Cottrell, who has been chosen to receive the Faculty of Social Sciences Award for Excellence in Teaching (2013). Her enthusiasm for economics is contagious. Due to her scintillating and entertaining approach to teaching, many students become fascinated with economics and pursue this major. Students overwhelmingly report that Marilyn has a “unique, effective and interactive way of getting through to students.” Her meticulous attention to detail ensures that students arrive in the upper year courses with the thorough background necessary to succeed. Marilyn generously makes herself available on campus and by email to answer queries regarding her courses. Her openness and patience with students is remarkable. Marilyn not only attempts to ensure that each student has opportunities to excel in her courses but also mentors students regarding careers in economics. She maintains contact with her students as they move through careers in banking and business and is able to draw on them to speak to students at Brock about these career opportunities. Marilyn’s teaching expertise is known outside Brock University. The Council of Ontario Universities recognized her development of the Learning Object for Principles of Macroeconomics. Her work on this Learning Object has received also much acclaim in the United States. She was chosen by a juried panel to present the details of her accomplishments at successive meetings of the American Economic Association. This quote from a student captures the sentiment of many, “I believe that Marilyn’s motivation, enthusiasm, and devotion to teaching and to the well-being of her students is exceptional. My Brock experience was enhanced by the opportunities afforded to me by Marilyn’s involvement.” A Brock student, now an investment banker in Europe and Dubai, also affirmed her influence, “I will forever be indebted to Marilyn.” Marilyn has received the following awards: 1998, Award for Part-time Instructors and Teaching Assistants; 2003, “Making a Difference” Award, 2006; The Council of Ontario Universities Award for Excellence in Teaching with Technology; 2007, Brock University Students’ Union Teaching Award; and 2009, Don Ursino Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Large Classes.
