Importing DMTI DEM data with MapInfo and Vertical Mapper
This procedure assumes a DEM has been downloaded from the DMTI FTP site and extracted to reveal the .txt and .prj files. The projection should be UTM, NAD83 and the units are metres. The software version used in this procedure is MapInfo 8.0 with Vertical Mapper 3.0.
- Run MapInfo with Vertical Mapper.
- From the Vertical Mapper dropdown list select Create GRID > Import GRID...

- From the GRID Import dialogue box click Add.

- Navigate to the DEM file(d30m030m06.txt), select it and click Open. A series of windows automatically prompt you for details regarding the DEM file. Fill in the boxes as follows:
- Projection for the Niagara area: Univeral Transverse Mercator (NAD 83); Zone 17.
NOTE: If more than one DEM for the area will be imported, check the box in each window indicating "Use for all imports of similar type".

- Accept the default Null value. Click OK.

- Select units as metres. Click OK.

- From the Grid Import dialogue box, click in the box to "Open all grids after import".
- Enter a location and filename (if other than the default) to save the import.
- Click "Add" to import additional DEM files in a batch procedure. Repeat the above steps for each import.
- Click OK to begin the import process.

- The new grid appears in a new map window.

- If the Grid Manager isn't visible select Vertical Mapper > Show Grid Manager.

- To apply relief shading to the view, click the colour button and check the box for "Relief shading".
