  • March 1, 2012:  Copyright workshop slides available online - On February 27, 2012, Brock's new Copyright Coordinator/Legal Advisor, Chabriol Colebatch, presented a workshop on the copyright considerations associated with course materials.  The workshop was very well attended (standing room only!) and offered practical tips on how to share materials with students.  The slides are available here and a 5 minute video recap is available here.

  • February 16, 2012: Copyright bill sent to Committee - On February 13, 2012, the copyright amendment bill, Bill C-11, passed second reading in the House of Commons and was referred to a legislative committee. The committee met on February 15, 2012 and has set a tight schedule, with plans to conclude its review by the end of March. The government has indicated that it is committed to passing the bill by April. It is uncertain whether the Bill will be modified at committee, but in its present form, it presents a mixed bag for educators, including some expanded rights (e.g. the expansion of fair dealing to cover educational purposes, the right to show films in class and to make free use of internet materials) but also some limitations. To learn more about the Bill, see the Government's fact sheet for teachers or review the Library of Parliament's Legislative Summary.

  • February 9, 2012: New series of copyright seminars to clarify copyright for Brock instructors - Brock's new Copyright Coordinator / Legal Advisor, Chabriol Colebatch, will be presenting a series of copyright seminars to help Brock instructors understand and navigate the copyright issues they encounter in their teaching. Jointly presented by the Library and CPI, the first seminar is on Monday, February 27, 2011 and will address the copyright considerations which arise when selecting materials for a course. For example, what copyright permissions rights do instructors have when using textbooks, coursepacks, electronic resources or print reserves? How can they ensure their teaching materials are copyright compliant? For more information about this seminar, and the entire series, click here.
