Graduate Students
Academic-Zone Learning Services offers tailored programming, respecting the professionalism and content knowledge of the graduate student. It is our mandate to guide students in the application and development of skills, knowledge, and abilities, supporting them in their efforts to understand and meet the demands of graduate studies. Support is tailored to students’ needs with respect to time, discipline, and genre, and may be accessed in a variety of formats, including:
· Group workshops led by professional Learning Services Instructors
· One-on-one consultations with a professional Learning Services

Group Workshops
Four or more graduate students may order a graduate group writing workshop tailored to their particular needs and scheduled at a time convenient for the group. Whereas the undergraduate workshops are led by A-Z Learning Peer Assistants, all graduate workshops are led by professional Learning Services Instructors with strong backgrounds in writing. Group sessions focus on areas of interest and provide an opportunity for discussion, practice, and exploration of various writing topics such as:
· Literature Reviews
· Advanced Persuasive Writing
· Advanced Critical Thinking
· Précis or Abstracts
· Advanced Revising and Editing
· Documentation (e.g., APA, ASA, MLA, Chicago)
· Advanced Grammar and Style
· Scientific Writing
· Poster Presentations
· Conference Etiquette
· A topic of your choice
One-on-One Consultations
A-Z Learning Services provides a one-on-one consultation/editing service for graduate students in which they meet with a Learning Services Instructor for a private session that:
- Is student-directed: direction and focus of consultation based on student request or student need
- Is student-centred: focus on dialogue, helping a student clarify and articulate his or her ideas
- Includes limited close editing (maximum one page), upon request, with student to increase student self-efficacy
- Includes writing samples to help familiarize students with genre and to foster an intuitive approach.
- Guides students to identify and assess their current understanding of and strategies for writing
- Uses structures and form to help students organize and manage information without limiting creativity
- Emphasizes not only form and patterns but also ways to develop and expand ideas, with a focus on fostering an intuitive approach.
