Visual Arts Admissions

APPLYING TO THE VISUAL ARTS PROGRAM

All prospective students are encouraged to apply and will be considered on the basis of secondary school marks and, where applicable, on a portfolio. The Visual Arts program is limited in its enrollment.

Students are accepted into the Visual Arts Program after receiving their acceptance by the University. Acceptance is based on grade average with the mid-70's being the expected requirement. For students transferring from other post-secondary institutions, admission in Visual Arts is based on transcripts that indicate grades received for visual arts courses and the transferability of credits.

Students currently registered at Brock who wish to change their major to Visual Arts or who wish to declare Visual Arts as a major must apply directly to the program. These applications will be considered in January and May of each year following a portfolio interview. For further information consult the portfolio guidelines below or contact the Department.

For more information on admissions to the VISA program see the Admissions page on the Brock University website.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Ontario Secondary School students must have a minimum of six Grade 12 U or M courses and have completed the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent

Students applying from high school require no portfolio as admission is based on grade-point-average.

Recommended courses: art (Art 12M), history and a second language

Expected Entrance average: 75%

If you are an out-of-province or international student please find admission requirements in the admissions section of the University Calendar or by contacting the Department of Fine Arts directly.

DECLARATION OR CHANGE OF MAJOR TO VISUAL ARTS:

Students wishing to declare or change their major to Visual Arts are considered for admission into the program twice a year – in January and May. Admission to the Visual Arts program requires a portfolio interview. We suggest that students seeking acceptance into the Visual Arts program make an appointment with the Chair, Murray Kropf, to present their portfolio for the purpose of determining whether they are qualified for the program. See portfolio guidlines below. Contact the Department Chair at mkropf@brocku.ca or by phone at extension 3212.

In the meantime, students wishing to plan for a change of major are advised to make an appointment with the Humanities Academic Advisor for Visual Arts, Alisa Cunnington to go over course options that will be of benefit should students succeed in being accepted into our program. Alisa can be reached at acunning@brocku.ca or at extension 5279.

PORTFOLIO GUIDELINES: (for Brock students applying for declaration or change of major)

An interview and portfolio evaluation provide the Department with the opportunity to assess a student's potential for future development and their suitability for the VISA studio program.

The portfolio should include 6 - 12 works that are as varied in subject as they are in medium. We recommend you present as many of the following types or combinations of media: drawing, painting, sculpture (submit only photographic documentation of sculpture be it slides or photographs), printmaking, photography or digital media. You should include a recent life-size portrait (head only) with a current sketchbook.

In an interview with one of the Visual Arts faculty, you will be asked to explain something about yourself, your interests, goals and present involvement with the visual arts.

Students submitting their portfolio digitally should do so on a CD. Images should be in JPEG format no more than 640 x 480 pixels at 150 dpi. Include a label with each image indicating your name, medium, dimensions and date of the work.

STUDIES ABROAD :

Students wishing to study abroad should be aware that there are many opportunities to pursue their studies for a year at many different Universities around the world. For more information on this please visit:
