Jonathan completed his PhD in Linguistics from Cornell University in 2011, and also holds a BA Honours in Linguistics from the University of British Columbia. Before joining the Department of Applied Linguistics, he held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Prosody Laboratory and the Centre for Research on Language, Mind and Brain at McGill University. Jonathan has also taught at Syracuse University.

Jonathan is currently teaching several courses in linguistic theory.

 

 

Jonathan's research focuses on the relationship between linguistic meaning and prosody (e.g. intonation, stress, rhythm). His approach combines insights and methods from theoretical, experimental, computational, corpus and psycholinguistics.

 

Jonathan is involved in an ongoing SSHRC- and NSF-funded project "Harvesting Speech Datasets for Linguistic Research on the Web" with collaborators at Cornell University and McGill University. The digital humanities project, based on Jonathan's dissertation work, was one of eight winners of the first international Digging Into Data Challenge.
