Justice at Brock: Alliance for Equity

Justice at Brock: Alliance for Equity

The Justice at Brock (JAB) committee is made up of volunteer faculty, staff and students who are interested in advocating for equity, diversity and social justice issues on campus. JAB was formed in 2008, when the Positive Space Campaign Committee determined that they wished to redefine themselves in order to expand their scope to address a wider variety of equity issues, including sexual assault and racism. JAB operates out of the Office of Human Rights and Equity Services and continues to act in an advisory role to the Positive Space Campaign. JAB is grateful to the following departments for financial support, past and present: Office of Human Rights and Equity Services; Human Resources, Environment, Health and Safety and Associate Vice-President, Student Services.

In 2009, JAB’s co-chairs, Nancy Cook and Margot Francis, together with JAB member Tamari Kitossa, were awarded a Best Practice Award by the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology in recognition of their collaborative work on several JAB projects and for the work that JAB does.

JAB's past and current work includes issues of sexual assault, racism and religious conflict. In 2009/10, JAB is advocated for and supported our students to successfully run a BUSU referendum to obtain ongoing funding for a Student Justice Centre at Brock.  The Student Justice Centre will support information and referral services, and programming for women’s issues, queer issues, and issues facing other minority students on campus.  To learn more about the Student Justice Centre, please email the SJC Coordinator at sjc@busu.net.

There are opportunities for volunteers to join this committee, its subcommittees, or to participate in events/initiatives that may arise out of the work of this committee. Volunteers may work in one or more areas of interest to them. The time commitment and responsibilities will be different for each event – speak to us to learn more about how you can volunteer and we will find opportunities that work for you.
