The following is the award citation for Katherine Schleifer who is a 2010 graduate student recipient of the Board of Trustees Spirit of Brock medal. Katherine graduated with an MA in Classics at Brock's 2010 Spring Convocation.

It’s only natural that Katherine Schleifer digs into life in so many ways - she has undertaken considerable field work in archeology while a graduate student at Brock.
Katherine is graduating today with a Master’s degree in Classics. Her thesis, “Beyond Child’s Play: Wealth, Status, and the Lives of Children in [ancient] Greece,” examined how children were used for display of social status and the perpetuation of wealth within the Mycenaean Bronze Age.
Katherine has compiled an outstanding record of academic achievement since her undergraduate days at Mount Allison University where she was awarded the Crake Travelling Scholarship, the Classics Department Award and two “Leadership Mount Allison” grants.
She has continued to excel throughout her master’s program. In addition to receiving Brock scholarships and research fellowships, Katherine was awarded funding to support two seasons of field activities at an archaeological excavation in Greece under the direction of Professor Angus Smith.
She has made valuable contributions to the Classics department at Brock. One of her proudest achievements was to organize the first annual Classics Graduate Student Conference, inviting students from around the world to share their research.
As part of the graduate community, Katherine served on the Graduate Students’ Association for two years as the representative for the Department of Classis. She also represented the University for three year as an international student ambassador while working at archeaological sites and study tours in Greece. As well, Katherine gave her time to undergraduate student activities as a volunteer at the annual symposium and at a variety of fundraising events.
Katherine also managed to carve out time to participate in the broader community as a volunteer for several organizations including the Mississauga Food Bank and the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers.
