Jennifer Ptasinski, Faculty of Applied Health Sciences

The following is the award citation for Jennifer Ptasinski who is a 2010 graduate student recipient of the Board of Trustees Spirit of Brock medal. Jennifer graduated with an MSc in Applied Health Sciences at Brock's 2010 Spring Convocation.

Jennifer Ptasinski believes in leading by example to encourage and motivate others to understand the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.
Her Brock experience truly reflects how she puts that belief into action – as a graduate student, a varsity athlete and a community volunteer.
Jennifer is graduating today with a Master’s of Science degree in Applied Health Sciences. Her thesis project focused on exercise training for individuals with spinal cord injury that involved functional electrical stimulation. In other words, her research examined the effectiveness of applying small electrical pulses to paralyzed muscles.
It was a challenging thesis project in which Jennifer worked with injured participants. She was well suited to this type of work that required patience, constant problem solving and above all else, the ability to establish a constructive rapport with each individual. Jennifer showed a complete commitment to the project – so much so that she has trained other students to operate the specialized equipment and ensure that the participants can continue to exercise once she moves on after graduation.
As a student athlete right from her undergraduate days, Jennifer played varsity rugby and was an academic all-Canadian athlete. She also was part of the novice rowing program and found time to coach high school rugby in Grimsby.
While pursuing her graduate degree, Jennifer continued to participate in Brock’s rowing program as a team captain and coach. Also, she became involved with the Niagara rowing community as a Henley Island volunteer at area regattas and now competes in the master’s rowing program.
Community service has been an important part of Jennifer’s life at Brock. She volunteers with fundraising activities such as the Rankin Cancer Run, the MS Walk and Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion.
Jennifer is a certified kinesiologist and a member of the Ontario Kinesiology Association (OKA). She runs group exercise classes and completes one-to-one therapy with residents at Tufford Nursing Home in St. Catharines.
In so many ways, Jennifer is making a difference to people of all ages and all abilities and we are proud of her accomplishments
