Co-op placements help launch career for international program graduate

Jingyi (Cherry) Liu was among 68 international students who were awarded degrees from graduate programs at Brock’s recent Fall Convocation.

Liu graduated from the co-op MBA International Student Program with a concentration in Finance. It was a particularly special day for Liu as her mother timed a visit from China to attend the ceremony.

In total, 255 graduate students celebrated their accomplishments during two convocation ceremonies on Oct. 16.

Liu is now making Canada her new home after back-to-back co-op placements helped launch her career.

She recently completed her second four-month work term with the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) and has embarked upon a new career as a full time Financial Officer with the MTO in their Toronto office.

“For both co-op assignments I applied the knowledge I gained through my MBA studies,” she says. “The knowledge and experience are my treasures in my life.”

Liu’s first co-op with the MTO began last January as a Junior Financial Analyst in their Financial Planning and Strategies Office of the Finance Branch. This office mainly looks after financial planning and budgeting and works closely with the Treasury Board. The work provided Liu with experience in the expenditure reconciliation of current fiscal year as well as the financial budget planning for next few years.

Due to her excellent performance, Liu’s work term was extended for another four months and she was transferred to the Controllership Office.

Not only did Liu return to Brock for her graduation ceremony, on Oct. 19 she participated in a graduate co-op student panel disussion to share her co-op and work experience with current MBA co-op students.

Overall, Liu says the MBA co-op experience provided her with a better understanding of government financial policies and procedures and it also allowed her to become familiar with the Integrated Financial Information System (IFIS) which is a widely used financial system across all ministries in Ontario.
