Tutoring for Literacy and Numeracy

Reading Support Program

To improve their reading and writing skills, children may attend the Learning Lab's Reading Support Program for one-on-one tutoring.

Each client works with a literacy tutor, who is a senior undergraduate or graduate student specializing in education and supervised by the Program Coordinator, Course Instructor and Clinic Director. Tutors are current or past students of the Reading and Literacy Development course where they learn about, and enhance their understanding of the reading process and learn effective reading instruction. Tutors use a variety of research-based teaching procedures to help their clients improve their reading and writing skills.

Both the Math and Reading Support Programs typically start in September and January and are 9 weeks in length. We will sometimes have a short 4 or 5 week program during the month of May.

Math Support Program

The Learning Lab now provides one-on-one math support to children and adolescents. Math support is provided throughout the school year. Programs are typically 8 to 9 weeks in length and are tailored to the needs of each individual client.

Each client is assigned a designated personal math tutor, who is a senior undergraduate or graduate student specializing in education studies. Sessions are given in a one-on-one setting under supervision.
