IMAGES OF 1996 FIELD CAMP

A collection of 'JPG' images from the 1996 edition of Field Camp, run from April 25, 1996 to May 5, 1996.

  1. Arrival - After driving from St. Catharines to Willisville through rain, snow and then rain again we arrived at the Lodge dock to be greeted by a coating of very wet, heavy snow as the rain continued to fall.

  2. Ready To Go - It's 8 AM on the first day and everyone is on the dock ready to be ferried across the the waiting vans. I am not sure what bodies on the left side of the photo are looking at in the water. Check out the foggy conditions a precursor to weather to follow later in the day.

  3. Mississagi Formation - An outcrop of Early Aphebian Mississagi Formation (Hough Lake Group, Huronian Supergroup) north of Elliot Lake, Ontario. Check out the attire and the accumulating snow on the ground, a total of 15 cm fell this day.

  4. Wheel Shot - Blades of ice grown on the hubcap of the van as a result of driving from Elliot Lake to Willisville during blizzard conditions.

  5. Charlton Lake Camp - Upon arriving back from Elliot Lake snow continued to fall at the camp. In total 5 to 10 cm fell here.

  6. The Calm after the Storm - Following the day of snow and a night of freezing temperatures (-10°C overnight)(Check out the ice surrounding the pontoon boat.) The day dawned bright but everything was covered with snow. To make the trip even more enjoyable, the other driver lost the key to his van last night - OH WHAT FUN FIELD CAMP IS!

  7. Felsic Norite - Group standing on Felsic Norite from the North Range of the Sudbury Igneous Complex.

  8. High Falls - Onaping River - Spring runoff was still quite high, causing a large volume of water to cascade over the falls along Highway 144. This shot was taken from the foot bridge at the top of the falls. Note the snow in the bush along the bank.

  9. Group Photo - The participants of this year's Field Camp at the A.Y. Jackson Lookout along Highway 144 north of Sudbury. High Falls on the Onaping River can be seen in the background. The previous phot was taken from the foot bridge, visible between the 7th and 8th people from the left.

  10. The Big Nickel - The title says it all. The superstack (1250 feet tall) at the INCO smelter is visible in the background.

  11. Drill Jumbo - Undergound at INCO's Crean Hill Mine on the 2850 level. The face is marked to show the position of the next set of holes to be drilled. The massive sulphide ore, pentlandite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite, lies to just to the left of the red line above the jumbo rig.

  12. GOLD - At INCO's precious metal refinery the highlight of the trip is to hold $250,000 worth of gold extracted from the Sudbury ores.

  13. Copper Refinery - Pouring molten copper anodes to be used in the electrolytic separation in the tank house, where the final copper produced is 99.999% Cu.

  14. Last Day of Mapping - On the last day of mapping the weather warmed up to + 18°C, which seemed to bring out the best or worst of the participants. The group is relaxing on Serpent Formation (Quirke Lake Group, Huronian Supergroup), with bedding planes dipping towards the observer.

  15. Willisville Lookout - High above Willisville at the scenic lookout. The site is formerly a forest fire lookout station (the tower has long since been removed). The view is to the East along the axis of the La Cloche Syncline. The hills in the distance are Lorrain Formation (Cobalt Group, Huronian Supergroup). The valley in which the lake sits and can be seen on the distant hills is the more easily weathered Gordon Lake Fomation marking the core of the syncline.

  16. Work Time - After mapping for four days it is now time to put together a finished map and report for the area, before we leave tomorrow.
