Program Requirements - M.T.S.
This programme is available to teachers, other church workers, and church members who wish to have a better understanding of their faith and their church. This may include course requirements for special programmes leading to certification for the teaching or deaconal ministry of Lutheran Church-Canada.
M.T.S. students take many of the same courses that the M.Div. Students do in the areas of biblical interpretation and Christian history and thought. They will also choose from a variety of elective courses and develop a treatise in their major area of study.
For students preparing to be a Lutheran teacher or church worker, the Colloquy Committee of Lutheran Church-Canada determines which courses are needed to meet their needs. By taking these courses at Concordia, St. Catharines, students are able simultanously to satisfy the committee's requirements and earn a post-graduate degree in theology!
The programme requires about two years to complete its 54 credit hours, including a treatise. An undergraduate degree is a prerequisite. See the current Academic Calendar for further details.

Special Programmes

Westfield House International Studies
Annually, one Concordia Lutheran Theological Seminary (CLTS) student, ordinarily of second-year M.Div. (or M.T.S.) standing, may apply for the opportunity to spend a full year in study at Westfield House, Cambridge, England. Cambridge, a lovely mediaeval town, is world famous as the home of one of the two oldest English universities. The university comprises 31 colleges, the first of which dates to 1284. Westfield House was established in 1962 as the theological study centre of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of England (ELCE), and houses as many as ten students, both British pastoral ministry candidates and international students. Its affiliation with Fitzwilliam College gives the students access to the university and its matchless library. Students at Westfield House combine attendance at university lectures with classes and tutorials under the Westfield faculty, consisting of the Preceptor, Tutors, and visiting scholars. Dr Thomas Winger, a former Westfield tutor, will consult with the student and Westfield to arrange an appropriate course of study and credit for the same at CLTS. While studying abroad, the student remains a full-time member of CLTS with all the concomitant privileges and responsibilities. At Westfield House, students will also gain experience of the wider fellowship of confessional Lutheranism by participating in the life of Resurrection Lutheran Church, Cambridge, and where practicable in the ELCE as a whole. Participation in the academic and theological life of the university affords the student the opportunity to grow in his knowledge and appreciation of other traditions of historic Christianity. Application is made to Westfield House through CLTS by February 15.
Diploma Programme
Concordia may accept a limited number of students lacking an undergraduate degree into the Pastoral Diploma Programme. Students must be mature, with a strong background in the Lutheran Church, and supported in their application by their District President or bishop. While the course of study is similar to the M.Div., no degree is awarded. For details see the Academic Calendar and speak with our Director of Admissions.
