Dr. Barbara Sainty
Associate Professor of Accounting
Barbara Sainty received her Ph.D. in Accounting at the Ohio State University in 1995. She has taught accounting at the University of Regina, the Ohio State University, the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario and here at Brock University. She joined Brock University in 1999 and taught in the inaugural Master of Accountancy program which started in January 2000. She has a passion for helping students understand the role of accounting as it affects the decision–making process of an organization. She is particularly proud that five of her Masters students have gone on to pursue doctoral studies in Accounting.
While at Brock, Sainty has been Director of the Master of Accountancy program, Department Chair, and Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs and AACSB International, Interim Dean, with the Faculty of Business and Interim Vice President and Associate Vice President of Finance.
Sainty has many research interests including the use of accounting information for decision-making and corporate governance issues. She has done research on teaching competencies, the role of education and social media in career success and the use of university budgets in strategic planning. She has published in several journals including the Journal of Accounting, Auditing and Finance, the Journal of Accounting Literature and the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization.
Prior to entering academe, Professor Sainty received a Retail Co-op diploma (Honours) from Humber College and worked in the retail industry for several years. Her interest in the budgets and numbers as a retail manager led her to explore other career options which eventually led to the accounting profession.
A qualified chartered professional accountant (CPA), she also holds the legacy designations of chartered accountant (CA) and certified management accountant (CMA). She articled at Ernst & Young, LLP and keeps active in the accounting profession. Currently she sits on the Board of Evaluators for the uniform final exam (UFE) in the CA process and has served on the Examinations Committee at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario. She has been active in the CPA process writing cases for the new CPA modules and championing Brock’s CPA accreditation process.
