In 2007, the City of Toronto invited Andrew McPherson and Deliveryboy to create a new score for Metropolis, Lang's silent science fiction masterpiece. Their composition blends jazz, classical, dub, found sound, ambient, hip-hop and post-rock to create a powerful suite of theme and variationsa ‘trip-hop Metropolis,’ according to the Toronto Star and Now Magazine. The show premiered in Dundas Square to an enthusiastic audience of over 800 people.
Two years later, with a Juno nomination and new solo record under his belt, McPherson decided the time was right to bring the show on the road. McPherson, who grew up in the Niagara area, describes the show as “sonic and atmospheric tour de force. The fact that we weave so many styles together to express the various themes and variations means that the broad musical lens is consistently moving with the dramatic arc of the film, as opposed to being these static musical chapters. Having said that, very early on Deliveryboy and I realised that the visuals told a pretty complete story without music, so we tried to approach it with as much respect and care for the film's intrinsic story line. It's so easy to just heap up the production with a whole bunch of music that might distract from the viewing experience and we really wanted to avoid that pitfall. The musical tone goes from brooding, barely audible ambience to full blown spectacle rock, something audiences at other film festivals have really responded to.”
BUFS and the Primavera Concert Series are delighted to host the Niagara premiere of this spectacular show!
