Registration and login are required to submit items online and to check the status of current submissions.

 

Author Guidelines

-Scholarly essays submitted to The Brock Review should not exceed 25 pages in length (12 pt font, double spaced), and should not be more than 10 MB in file size. Essays should adhere to the latest edition of the Chicago Manual of Style and include endnotes (where necessary) and a bibliography. Please note: in-text, parenthetical citations should not be used.

-Manuscripts should be original works and should not be published (or under consideration for publication) in another format.

-Each article submission must be accompanied by a 100 word abstract.

-It is the sole responsibility of the author to obtain any necessary copyright permissions for images accompanying an essay. If your essay is accepted for publication, you must provide copies of these permissions before your essay can be published.

-Book reviews should be between 500-1500 words in length. The latest edition of the Chicago Manual of Style should be used as a guide for citations and references. Book reviews should be accompanied by a brief (2-3 line) biography of the reviewer.

-Creative work (i.e.: paintings, photographs, poetry, short fiction or other types of work suitable to the online format of the journal) should be submitted in an electronic format (brockreview@brocku.ca). In the event that your submission is too large of a file to send via email, CDs or DVDs can be sent to the address below. Creative work must be accompanied by a statement indicating that the creator(s) of the piece have given consent to have it included in The Brock Review. Creative pieces should be accompanied by a brief (2-3 line) biography of the author/artist.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  3. When available, the URLs to access references online are provided, including those for open access versions of the reference. The URLs are ready to click (e.g., http://pkp.sfu.ca).
  4. The text is double spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review) have been followed.
  7. Citations follow the latest version of the Chicago Manual of Style and the submission uses endnotes rather than in-text citations.

Submission of an original manuscript to The Brock Review will be taken to mean that it represents original work not previously published, that it is not being considered elsewhere for publication. If a submission is accepted for publication, it may not be published elsewhere in the same form, for commercial purposes, in any language, without the consent of The Brock Review.
