Sixty scientifically minded girls visited Brock this month as part of an annual event to encourage them to enter scientific fields.

Grade 11 students from as far as Belleville and the Ottawa Valley attended the two-day Scientifically Yours conference. It was the 21st year for the conference, which promotes scientific professions and gives the students a taste of university life.

They participated in a number of hands-on projects, including exploring laser holography, transferring data by light and measuring brain function. There were also activities to celebrate the International Year of Chemistry, including building the periodic table of 112 elements out of graham crackers, chemical crossword puzzles and short chemistry calculations.

The plenary address was given by alumna Naomi Nemeth, a director of MetalCorp with years of experience in investor relations and the mining industry.

During her talk, entitled “You can have it all…just not at once,” Nemeth told the students that some of the jobs they will have in the future likely don’t even exist today. She cited her own, as an investor relations consultant for junior mining companies, as an example. Nemeth earned a BSc in Geology and Biology from Brock in 1984.

She encouraged the students to network and get involved with professional associations.

“Who you know will get you where you want to go,” she said.

The event, held May 5 and 6, culminated with a dinner with students and female mentors who work in scientific professions.
