Hichem Ben-El-Mechaiekh

Hichem Ben-El-Mechaiekh is a Mathematics professor and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science. He’s been at Brock since 1988, or “a good part of my adult life.” He lives in St. Catharines on the Niagara escarpment at what he calls “the crest of the cauldron.” One of the biggest influences has been his mother, who has “courage, kindness and an even temper,” he says.

What do you like about your job?

a) The constant learning and the sharing with students (they keep my mind and spirit younger!) and colleagues.
b) The opportunity provided by mathematics and sciences to have a glimpse at the beauty and mystery of the universe.
c) The universal dimension of academic endeavors.

What do you do for fun?

For me, there is no more pleasurable experience than solving a challenging mathematical research problem. So, fun is when I find the time to work on such problems. Next to that: I enjoy writing poetry (in French), reading, cooking a hearty meal for friends and loved ones, spending quality time with family … All the rest (or almost) is duty!

What was the last good book you read?

Of Love and Other Demons by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
