Staff member fundraising to cook with Gordon Ramsay

She holds theme nights for her friends, cooking up international dishes and various fondues.

Her hamburgers are lovingly called “baseball burgers” because the patties are thick, round and juicy, and whenever she makes them, her friends come running.

Now Cara Boese, a senior relationship manager in Co-op Programs, has a new culinary goal. She wants to cook with Gordon Ramsay.

Boese is participating in the Chef’s Challenge – the Ultimate Battle for a Cure, a breast and ovarian cancer research fundraiser benefiting the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute and the Marvelle Koffler Breast Centre of Mount Sinai Hospital.

If she raises $2,500, she can attend an event with Gordon Ramsay in Toronto on Nov. 20 and 21. If she raises $4,000, she can take a guest with her. If she is one of the top 50 fundraisers, she gets to cook in Ramsay’s kitchen, a dream come true for the amateur culinary artist.

“I just love to cook,” she said. “And I’m a Gordon Ramsay enthusiast. My husband and I have certain shows we love to watch, and whenever Hell’s Kitchen is on, it’s like, ‘Get the kids to bed.’”

Boese started cooking in university, when independence forced her to make her own meals. When she travels abroad, she returns with cookbooks. Since becoming a mom (she has a three-year-old daughter and a one-year-old son), she also enjoys baking.

“I like to bring people together,” she said. “When people come over, food becomes more of an experience.”

The cause is also close to her heart. Her mother-in-law recently had 16 rounds of radiation and months of chemotherapy for breast cancer. Her aunt is also a cancer survivor. One of Boese’s close friends recently lost her sister to the disease.

Two weeks ago, Boese’s husband Ryan paid her $100 registration fee for the Ramsay fundraiser and told her to go for it. There’s a time crunch – Boese has until Nov. 18 to raise as much as possible for cancer research and education.

If Ramsay ever came to her house for dinner, Boese knows what she’d make.

“I’d probably have to make him a blue cheese hamburger,” she said. “And sweet potato fries.”
