Speaker series brings concussion expert to Brock

Boy with trauma of the head

A world-renowned expert in concussions and spinal cord injuries will be speaking soon at Brock University.

With concussions becoming a concern in many major sports, more importance is being placed on participants and their parents knowing the risks a concussion can pose.

Neurosurgeon Dr. Charles Tator will speak about the issue Monday, May 4 as part of the Lifespan Centre Speaker Series.

Concussions – What are they and what can I do? will feature an important and candid talk about the issue. Dr. Tator will discuss what concussions are and how they impact the developing brain.

“Now that we know how prevalent concussions are and their potential long term developmental effects, families, researchers and the community need to keep the discussion going about concussion and its relation to wellness. We are thrilled to have Dr. Tator come and present to our community,” said Dr. Sid Segalowitz, Director of the Centre for Lifespan Development Research.

Tator has focused his efforts on learning about head injuries that occur while participating in sports and recreational activities. His advocacy has resulted in new legislation and prevention methods being put in place.

“Concussion prevention and management are team sports, and to be effective, the whole community has to be playing,” said Dr. Tator.

Attendees will learn how to best identify, treat and prevent concussions while providing tips and information to help parents, educators, practitioners, and coaches better understand this important issue.

The event will take place Monday, May 4, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Academic South Room 204. The event is free to attend, but an RSVP is required as space is limited. Register now.
