Brock’s big Thanksgiving regatta turns into a food drive

Racing won’t be the only business at hand this Saturday (Oct 11) when more than 650 rowers from a dozen universities compete at the 50th annual Brock Invitational Rowing Regatta at Henley Island.

Brock’s head coach Peter Somerwil has challenged all coaches and athletes to fill a pickup truck, provided by local Ed Learn Ford dealership, with canned goods that will be donated to the local non-profit organization, Community Care.

“Most people will eat more at this regatta than some families will eat over the entire Thanksgiving weekend,” said Somerwil. “Although we’re all fierce competitors on the water, it’s great to see the university rowing community come together for such a worthwhile cause”.

Spectators can also take part by bringing a non-perishable food item in lieu of an admission charge.

The Brock Invitational is a seeding regatta for programs participating in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) circuit.

Then on Oct. 25, Ontario’s best university rowers return to the St. Catharines course when Brock hosts the 2014 OUA Rowing Championships.
