You published your first book, but there’s a part two in there somewhere. You hunker down to tackle that project, but … you soon discover that writing your second book has its own tricky challenges.

Susan Ferber, executive editor of Oxford University Press, will be on campus Friday, Sept. 19 at 3 p.m. to deliver her talk, “The Second Book: Advice for publishing monograph No. 2.”

Although it’s easier to get a second book published – as you’ve already established a track record of sorts – there are unique challenges, says history professor and talk organizer David Schimmelpenninck.

Chief among these are balancing writing with teaching – many first books are based on dissertations, which doesn’t require as much time as starting from scratch – and making sure Book No. 2 is distinct from Book No. 1.

“We’re very fortunate to have the editor of a leading academic press give us the inside scoop on how to go about publishing the second book,” says Schimmelpenninck, adding that Ferber’s talk will include more general publishing information such as how to approach a publisher and how university presses operate.

“The Second Book: Advice for publishing monograph no. 2” will be held in GL 201 (aka the Aquarium) at 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19.
