Think writing an exam is tough? Try pitching your business idea to some of Canada’s most successful entrepreneurs.

At the Monster Pitch event on March 4, students at Brock University’s Goodman School of Business will be competing for a prize package that includes mentoring, business services and cash.

Students pre-selected on the strengths of their proposals will pitch those plans to a panel that includes Jim Treliving and Bruce Croxon of CBC’s Dragons’ Den, Spara Capital president Jason Sparaga (BBA ’93) and Deborah Rosati (BAdmin’84), corporate director.

The annual event is organized by the Brock University Entrepreneurship Club. This year’s winning pitch will earn the future entrepreneurs a grant of $3,000 to put towards their business idea.

Don Cyr, dean of the Goodman School of Business, knows that, for most students, the most sought-after of those prizes is access to Canada’s biggest names in entrepreneurship.

“Events like Monster Pitch connect our current students with alumni who were once in their places,” said Cyr. “The chance to receive feedback and make connections with our alumni and the Dragons will be worth more to the participating students than the cash prize.”

Croxon, returning for a second year as a judge, encouraged fellow Dragon Treliving to join him on the panel, and Cyr is optimistic they’ll both be back to judge again.

“We have a strong history of nurturing entrepreneurship at Goodman. Our students are pitching ideas that demonstrate their creativity, their passion and their business knowledge. It’s inspiring to see that from undergraduate students.”

Monster Pitch will be held on Tuesday, March 4. Tickets are $5 for Brock students and will be available on the third floor of Taro, across from Taro 303 during the following times:

  • Wednesday, Feb. 26: 12 noon to 7 p.m.
  • Thursday, Feb. 27: 12 noon to 5 p.m.
