Visit by J.F. Oberlin University from Japan

On August 14, 2009, a delegation from J.F.Oberlin University, Japan, visited Brock University. Brock formalized an Agreement of Cooperation with J.F. Oberlin University in early 2007, following mutual visits and discussions between senior administrators, faculty and staff at Oberlin and Brock. Dr. Bruce Batten, Vice-President for International Relations at Oberlin University, a member of current visiting delegation, visited Brock once before in late Fall 2006. Vice-Provost & Associate Vice-President Student Services Kim Meade and the Director of International Market Development, Dr. Glen Irons also visited Oberlin in early 2007. Since the initial agreement was signed, several groups of students from Oberlin (approx. 10 – 15 in each) have come to study in the ESL program for one or two terms. There is a group of Oberlin students coming next month for the Fall term of the Intensive English Language Program.

The current visiting delegation members included Provost Dr. Takashi Okoshi, Dean & Chair of Cornerstone Education and Foreign Language Education Dr. Masayuki Adachi and Dr. Bruce Batten. The main purpose of this visit was for the Faculty of Social Sciences to develop a collaborative degree with JF Oberlin University in Japan. The Faculty has been communicating electronically about this for the last academic year and planned this visit with Dr. Batten to finalize details around how this collaborative degree could work for both Brock and Oberlin. They have decided to first focus on four possible program areas (in Social Sciences) where there appears to be a good “match” or “complementariness” between our universities – Psychology; Communications; Tourism & Environment and Sociology. They are working on details so that Oberlin students may study for two years at Oberlin and then transfer to Brock for the last two years of their degree, ultimately earning a Brock degree.

During their visit, the delegation also met with ESL Services and other International offices staff – from International Services, International Market Development and Brock International – taking the opportunity to learn more about each other and discuss other possible areas for concrete collaboration.

The delegation met with Dr. Murray Knuttila, Provost and Vice-President, Academic
