How to Avoid Plagiarism
What is plagiarism?
Plagiarism is submitting material, in whole or in part, that is not your own work without citing the source.
· Plagiarism can occur in writing, art, music, computer codes, mathematics and scientific work.
When must you give credit?
You must give credit (cite), when you use another persons ideas, opinion, theory, facts, statistics, etc., or any information that is not considered common knowledge.
What is Common Knowledge?
Common knowledge refers to facts that can be found in numerous places and are likely to be known my many people (e.g. Pierre Trudeau was Prime Minister of Canada).
· This type of information is considered generally known and does not need to be documented (cited).
Other ways to avoid plagiarism:
1. Develop good research skills.
2. Being organized will help you to keep track of sources.
3. Develop your time management skills.
· Poor time management often leads students to cut corners.
4. Learn the used the citation styles (APA, MLA) correctly.
5. Be sure you understand the goals and expectations of the assignment.
· When in doubt, ask your instructor.
6. Keep draft copies of your work
· This may come in handy if your work is lost.
