Labour action could impact elevator services at Brock
Posted May 03, 2013
While all unionized elevator mechanics in Ontario walked off the job May 1, 2013 due to labour action, there is currently no disruption to any elevator services at Brock University.
Facilities Management has initiated a contingency plan to ensure that Brock’s 35 elevating devices continue to function reliably and safely throughout the duration of the dispute. The University’s contract elevator maintenance provider employs elevator mechanics represented by the striking International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) Local 90.
Elevators must be inspected and maintained on a monthly basis and Brock’s inspections are currently up to date for the month of May. All cars, lifts and dumbwaiters are currently in operation and have been maintained and inspected as per Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) requirements.
Facilities Management will continue to send updates and post notices about elevator outages around campus. Person's requiring assistance in the event an elevator is out of service should contact Campus Security by calling x3200 or x4300. The University's response to an elevator entrapment does not change and all entrapments will be responded to accordingly by calling Campus Security on the emergency phone in the elevator.
The Brock community’s patience is greatly appreciated during this disruption, which may result in longer than normal service and repair times.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Facilities Management Customer Service at x3717 or email facilitiesmanagement@brocku.ca or Dave McArthur, Mechanical Services Manager at dmcarthur@brocku.ca
Annual Main Campus Switch from Heating to Cooling
Posted April 30, 2013
Facilities Management trade staff are busy preparing the Main Campus cooling systems at the central chilling plant for summer operation. Due to the type of heating and cooling system that is used here at Brock University many buildings on the Main Campus are not capable of heating and cooling during the same cycle. As daytime temperatures increase nightly temperatures will remain relatively cool making building heating necessary. As we experience typical spring time daily cycles of low night time temperatures and warmer day time temperatures some areas on the Main Campus will experience higher than normal temperatures during regular office hours. Facilities Management staff will continue to make the Main Campus as comfortable as possible by bringing in cool fresh air into the areas that are normally cooled by the central chilling plant until night time heating is no longer required. If your area experiences cooling issues please refrain from operating any heat producing equipment which is not necessary as well as shut off any lighting that is not required. Offices with windows should close blinds when possible to keep out radiant heat.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Facilities Management at x3717 or facilitiesmanagement@brocku.ca or David McArthur, Manager Mechanical Services at dmcarthur@brocku.ca.

UPDATE: Drinking water in the Cairns Complex (Feb. 26)
Posted February 26, 2013
From Brock News http://www.brocku.ca/brock-news/?p=21051 Drinking water fountains in the Cairns Complex are back in business. As a result of last week’s hot water testing in the Cairns Family Health and Bioscience Research Complex, the decision was taken to test drinking water at various points across campus. As a precautionary measure, drinking fountains in the Cairns Complex were temporarily taken out of service, and users of the facility were also advised not to consume water from kitchens and sinks in the building until further notice. According to recent test results conducted by a third party, which have been reviewed by Niagara Region Public Health, there are no issues or concerns with the lead content in drinking water in the Cairns Complex or across campus at Brock. Based on these results, the precautionary measures with respect to drinking water in the Cairns Complex have been lifted. Drinking water in the facility is safe to drink.
For more information on Ontario’s Standard on Lead in Drinking Water visit: http://www.ene.gov.on.ca/stdprodconsume/groups/lr/@ene/@resources/docume...
What can you do to further reduce your exposure to lead in drinking water; • Use cold water for drinking or cooking. • Never cook or mix infant formula using hot water from the tap. • Make it a practice to run the water at each tap before use. • Do not consume water that has sat in plumbing for more than six hours. First, make sure to run the water until you feel the temperature change before cooking, drinking, or brushing your teeth.

Facilities Management has taken advantage of the Electricity Retrofit Incentive Program (ERIP) through the University’s local utility (Horizon Utilities) to change over 4,000 T12 lamps. The change over has yielded an average energy savings of 33% saving the University over $40,000 a year coupled with a retrofit incentive of over $12,000 from the ERIP program. All these projects help the University reduce energy use and save money while enabling Facilities Management to retrofit aging infrastructure in a cost efficient way.
